The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council Joins the African Hydrogen Partnership

Kyiv (Ukraine), Port Louis (Mauritius) - 6 February 2024

The African Hydrogen Partnership (AHP) is delighted to welcome the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council as its first member from Eastern Europe.

The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council is the national hydrogen energy association of Ukraine. The association is dedicated to the development of green hydrogen as an integral part of the production and supply of alternative energy sources as well as the dissemination of hydrogen technologies in a variety of industry and business sectors. The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council was founded in 2018 with the purpose of combining and focusing the efforts of energy businesses, financial institutions, science and the public sector striving to achieve energy independence of Ukraine, improving the effective use of energy and implementing a sustainable hydrogen roadmap in and for Ukraine.

Polina Kazakevych (President of the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council) said,

“Joining The African Hydrogen Partnership marks a significant stride towards a global alliance for sustainable energy. As the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council, we are proud to contribute our expertise and commitment to the cause, fostering a shared vision for a hydrogen-powered future that transcends borders and empowers nations. Together, we illuminate the path towards energy independence, environmental stewardship, and a brighter, greener tomorrow.”

Dr. Oleksandr Riepkin (Founder and Member of the Board of the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council) remarked,

"Strategic collaboration between the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council and the African Hydrogen Partnership marks a significant milestone in our commitment to advancing hydrogen technologies and fostering sustainable energy solutions on a global scale. Ukraine and Africa, with their abundant renewable resources and growing energy demands, present an incredible opportunity for collaboration. By aligning our efforts, expertise, and innovative approaches we can amplify the impact of hydrogen technologies in addressing the energy challenges faced by both our regions. We are enthusiastic about the shared opportunities and collective impact that this collaboration will foster.”

Dr Innocent Uwuijaren (AHP Director and Chairman) stated,

“The Ukrainian Hydrogen Council is the hydrogen association of Ukraine and we are delighted that they have become a member of the AHP. We strongly believe in international alliances with organizations which we want to work with and we very much look forward to working with the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council and their members and partners and, indeed, we have collaborated with the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council in the past. Ukraine is a major exporter of agricultural products and raw materials like wheat and steel, and as such, Ukraine's economy depends on hard-to-abate sectors which cannot decarbonize without hydrogen. The economy of Ukraine shares many similarities, challenges and opportunities with economies in emerging markets, developing nations and countries in Africa. A cooperation between the African Hydrogen Partnership and the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council would enable regions to work together on similar projects and concentrate efforts on common tasks such as establishing green fertilizer plants for the agricultural sector."

Marie Espitalier-Noël (AHP Director and AHP Association Board Member) said,

“We extend a warm welcome to the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council, marking a significant step towards fostering international collaboration in the development of green hydrogen. This year, Ukraine has pledged to deepen links with African countries, through diplomatic missions and the building of mutually beneficial economic partnerships. Clean hydrogen emerges as a pivotal link, connecting strategic collaboration opportunities between Ukraine and Africa. These encompass the production and trade of agricultural goods, fertilizers, the decarbonisation of local industries, and the facilitation of access to clean energy. Reinforcing the bond between the AHP and the UHC will provide a significant platform to tackle shared challenges and forge a path for the integration of clean hydrogen across diverse sectors, creating a more sustainable future for Ukraine, Africa, and beyond.”
