Lagos Free Zone Joins the African Hydrogen Partnership
Lagos (Nigeria), Port Louis (Mauritius) - 11th of September 2023
The African Hydrogen Partnership (AHP) is delighted to welcome Lagos Free Zone as its first Free Zone member.
Promoted by Singapore-based Tolaram, Lagos Free Zone is the first private free zone in Nigeria. Centrally located in Lagos State, the commercial center of West Africa’s largest economy, the zone covers an area of 850 hectares. It is fully equipped with world-class infrastructure, a single clearance window for ease of doing business, and integrated with the 90-hectare Lekki deep seaport, which will allow for access to regional and international markets. With a focus on the ease of doing business, Lagos Free Zone is at the forefront of serving your business in Nigeria.
Dinesh Rathi (MD & CEO at the Lagos Free Zone) said,
“We are pleased to announce our association with the African Hydrogen Partnership, whose vision to lay the foundation for establishing Hydrogen economies and societies in Nigeria matches our own ambitions of developing sustainable businesses in emerging economies. At Lagos Free Zone, we are developing an 850-hectare mixed-use industrial township, which will be a significant driver of the Nigerian economy while targeting to be carbon Neutral by 2035. Hence, we are constantly exploring and evaluating innovative approaches to achieving this. Joining the AHP is our first step towards including hydrogen in our energy mix to facilitate our growing energy demand at Lagos Free Zone.”
Prem Krishna (General Manager - Power & Gas) said,
"Joining the AHP allows us to be in the company of like-minded individuals and institutions looking for a greener tomorrow but are mindful of the challenges of providing low-cost, energy-efficient solutions in developing economies in Africa. We hope to learn and help build the community, which will lead to innovation and the development of unique solutions to cater to the unique challenges in Africa while striving to increase energy access across the continent. In the next ten years, the manufacturing and commercial establishments within Lagos Free Zone would need approximately 100 MW of power in addition to energy for other process needs. This partnership with AHP will enable us to ensure we fulfill our demand while maintaining our competitive advantage and being sustainable simultaneously.”
Dr Innocent Uwuijaren (AHP Director and Chairman) stated,
“Lagos Free Zone is Nigeria’s first privately owned economic zone and is part of the Tolaram Group, a private group based in Singapore. Tolaram has specialized over decades in doing business in emerging economies and seeks to make a difference to the communities where it is active. It employs more than 20,000 people internationally, and it provides essential consumer products to over half a billion people across Africa, integrating local manufacturing facilities and a vast sales and distribution network that has positioned it as the trusted partner in Africa for multiple global brands. In the infrastructure sector, Tolaram has been a prime mover in the development of Lekki Port and Lagos Free Zone in Nigeria. Lekki Port, the single largest private infrastructure investment in the maritime sector in Nigeria was built in partnership with Nigerian Ports Authority, Lagos State Government and China Harbour Engineering Company and has been commercially operational since April 2023.
Green hydrogen and its derivatives will have significant implications for many of the businesses and industries in which the Tolaram Group is involved in Africa and Tolaram’s insight into all aspects of the potential deployment and use of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Africa will be of the greatest value to the AHP, as will the Group’s huge experience of doing business with and in Africa.”
Prof Bamidele Adebisi (AHP Director and AHP University Board Member) said,
“At the AHP, we see green hydrogen as more than just another energy source; to us, green hydrogen is a key enabler for socio- economic transformation through access to affordable clean energy, industrialization, increased agricultural productivity, among other benefits. This is why we are so excited to welcome Lagos Free Zone to our fold. This new addition will greatly complement the existing team in AHP and enable us to deliver on our vision.”
