Gaussin: CEA-Liten delivers the first Hydrogen Power Pack fuel cell to Héricourt

Source: Gaussin, 16th July 2018

Gaussin Manugistique (EURONEXT GROWTH FR0010342329) announces the delivery to the company headquarters in Héricourt of the Hydrogen Power Pack by CEA-Liten (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique – Laboratoire d’Innovation pour les Technologies des Energies Nouvelles et les Nanoparticules). This followed the signing on 4 November 2015 of an agreement between CEA and the Gaussin Group subsidiary Batterie Mobile, which specified the new delivery schedule planned for the Techsup project initiated in 2012. The test phase will thus start soon for the equipment, along with the transfer of technology know-how and the associated training.

Hydrogen is a clean, efficient and very cheap source of energy

When used in a fuel cell, hydrogen combines with the oxygen in the air to produce electricity, with water as the only waste product. Hydrogen can be produced from a variety of energy sources, particularly renewable energy. As a result, it offers a valuable alternative for fossil fuel.

The Gaussin Hydrogen Power Pack uses hybrid hydrogen/battery technology.

It is made up of a battery element and two H2 fuel cell systems rated at 40 kW each, that is a total of 80 kW.

The battery element is made up of a 144 kW lithium battery drawer identical to those developed for the Full Elec power pack.

Functions of the hydrogen fuel cell module

Five hybridisation modes are available, each making it possible to adapt to the operational needs of
the application:

  • Set point battery charge level regulation
  • Interval battery charge level regulation
  • Life extender
  • Direct power control
  • Full Elec mode

In order to increase the life of batteries, the power pack has a “cocooning” system made up of polymer resin panels and an air-conditioning and heating system that keep the pack fully sealed and the batteries at a stable temperature.

Expected performance, 70-tonne vehicle

With a five minute recharging time, vehicles of the Gaussin range running on Hydrogen Power Packs will eventually operate for 6 to 12 hours for a very low operating cost. The power pack supplies the energy required for an ATT or AIV vehicle carrying loads, particularly containers up to 70 tonnes

Intellectual property of the Hydrogen Power Pack

The development of the Hydrogen Power Pack has led to the registration of four patents, for which Gaussin has a non-exclusive licence.

Market outlook

Hydrogen is a clean source of energy, which is environmentally friendly and does not produce greenhouse gases. It is accessible to all, anywhere on the globe, and can be applied to a wide variety of contexts.

While it has been believed to be the technology of the distant future, hydrogen fuel has experienced rapid progress in recent years, with many innovations.

France is a pioneering country in that area. On 1 June 2018, Nicolas Hulot, the Minister for Ecological Transition and Solidarity, announced the launch of a plan for green hydrogen, with a funding package of €100 million.

Industrial vehicles running on hydrogen are limited to lift trucks. In the medium term, Gaussin will offer hydrogen fuel systems for its vehicles, in order to supplement the alternative energy range of its product portfolio.
