India, Chennai: MoU for Developing a Fuel Cell-Based Train Prototype

Rohit Kumar reported, "Chennai: The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with SRM Institute of Science & Technology to develop fuel cell-based train prototype. SRM University Pro Vice-Chancellor, D. Narayana Rao, registrar N. Sethuraman and ICF Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer B Chandrasekaran signed the MoU.

More Information:
  • The ICF will manufacture the train and SRM will provide the energy storage systems
  • The sub-systems including fuel cells shall be available by December 2018 and the first prototype shall be ready by mid of 2019.
  • It will operate between loco, shell and furnishing units of ICF
  • This is first-of- its-kind initiative to make use of fuel cell technology in India, perhaps in Asia.
  • A release from the ICF said, on successful completion, it is planned to make a commercial fuel cell based train set. (...)"
