Visedo has supplied its electrification expertise for a first-of-its-kind project to convert a street sweeper from diesel to hydrogen.
The Finnish manufacturer recently completed delivery of an electric drive system for the hydrogen fuel cell-powered cleaning machine that is not only much quieter than a diesel model, but also only emits water rather than CO2 pollution.
The machine was converted by Holthausen, in cooperation with the municipality of Groningen, and the sweeper recently entered service in the village of Hoogezand – the first project of its kind in The Netherlands.
The machine can run for 1.5 days on a single hydrogen charge and its operating noise was reduced by half, from the 120 dBA of a traditional diesel powered vehicle to 60 dBA. This number is expected to fall even lower, to about 40 dBA, with upgrades.
Carl Holthausen of Holthausen said:
“With the old machines producing 120 decibels, it can shake the windows of your house as it passes by. Our sweeper is now at 60 decibels so it creates much less noise pollution.”
Several Dutch cities, including Rotterdam and Amsterdam, have shown interest. Vatican City has also requested information about the project.
“Vatican City is currently cleaned with battery-powered electric cleaners but the sweeper batteries are empty after 4.5 hours of operating.”
Visedo supplied the PowerSYSTEM and additional PowerBOOST, a DCDC-converter for the fuel cell, as well as the PowerDRUM propulsion motor that drives the hydraulic main pump delivering power to the vehicle.
