TOTAL Opens Tenth Hydrogen Fuelling Station

Source: TOTAL, 19th May 2017

  • Cooperation with H2 MOBILITY for environmentally friendly mobility
  • Pioneer in hydrogen mobility in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  • Public subsidies of almost 700,000 Euros from the federal government

With the opening of the hydrogen fueling station on Tessiner Straße in Rostock, TOTAL Deutschland GmbH has put its tenth station of this kind into operation. The multi-energy fueling station, which, in addition to conventional fuel and hydrogen will also offer charging stations for battery-operated electric vehicles, is both the first public hydrogen fueling station in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the first to arise from a partnership between TOTAL and the consortium H2 MOBILITY. In a first phase, H2 MOBILITY wants to establish a network of 100 fueling stations in Germany by the end of 2018 and, with that, set the foundation for the market launch of environmentally friendly electric vehicles with hydrogen-fuel-cell propulsion systems.

In the consortium H2 MOBILITY, companies merged together with the companies Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, Shell OMV und TOTAL as vehicle manufacturers, technology and gas suppliers, and infrastructure operators with the goal of creating a German-wide network of hydrogen fueling stations. Further automobile manufacturers are associated partners of H2 MOBILITY. The demonstration project Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) laid the groundwork for the expansion of the hydrogen fueling stations in Germany and, with that, also for the new stations.

“For 15 years, TOTAL Deutschland has worked on the research and testing of pilot facilities for a hydrogen infrastructure. That’s why we are thrilled that the development of a fueling station network is now making progress and that additional vehicles will also enter the market.”, explained CEO of TOTAL Deutschland GmbH, Bruno Daude-Lagrave, on Friday. “Hydrogen makes it possible to operate electric vehicles that can cover long distances with short refueling times — meaning, a form of mobility and autonomy that our customers very much value today.”

Along with the construction and the operation of fueling stations, TOTAL is also involved in the question of the production of hydrogen from renewable energy in order to ensure that this form of electric mobility also brings tangible environmental advantages. This is why TOTAL has been a partner in the first hydrogen power plant in the world since 2011, where hydrogen is produced from water at peak capacity from wind turbines per electrolysis. That’s how hydrogen mobility creates a link between the energy revolution and the transport sector.

“In the last years, hydrogen fueling stations and vehicles have proven their everyday suitability,” confirms Nikolas Iwan, CEO of H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH % CO.KG. “With the development of a nationwide, reliable infrastructure, we are creating the prerequisites for a successful market launch of fuel-cell vehicles.”

Hydrogen as an electricity based fuel for use in fuel cell cars is a key contribution for the achievement of the green house gas reduction objectives. The main challenge for the upcoming years will be the appropriate build-up of the refueling infrastructure. “We are now one step further on this road. Each additional hydrogen fuel station is also a decision for the future market success. Politics have developed well adapted framework conditions in order to support the private companies with their investments in a sustainable mobility system and to make their economic risk accountable in a better way”, said Thorsten Herbert, head of transport and infrastructure at the National Organization Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW). “With H2 MOBILITY the industry has pledged to build up to 400 hydrogen stations over the next years. The first 50 stations will be publicly subsidized in the framework of the National Innovation Program Hydrogen and Fuel Cells (NIP).”

Representing the regional government of the Land Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Ullrich Buchta from the ministry for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization said: “With currently already 70 percent of the electricity in our Land being produced from renewable energies, we are well positioned to realize the necessary link between the transport and the energy sector and thereby promote a sustainable mobility strategy. Beside the use of battery driven electric vehicles the production of electricity based fuels from renewable energy is necessary to meet the climate protection goals of the transport sector. The opening of this first multi energy fuel station is a signal for all those who are engaged in our region to take advantage of the potential of innovation and creation of values linked to this system change in the energy sector.”

The technology supplier for the hydrogen station is Nel Hydrogen Solutions, a division from NEL ASA. The publicly listed, hydrogen-technology company has established numerous hydrogen fueling stations in the last ten years. “The new generation H2Station® that we installed for TOTAL in Rostock is the result of extensive field tests in different surroundings. It comprises innovative, specially developed solutions that guarantee top performance in accordance with the newest international standards for fueling stations,” says Bjørn Simonsen, Vice President of Market Development and Public Relations.

In the future, at the fueling station on Tessiner Straße, charging stations for battery-operated electric vehicles will round off the offering of different forms of energy and the entire hydrogen fueling station is to be supplied with regenerative electricity. For that, a battery buffer storage will also be built at the station by the partner company WIND-projekt GmbH and will be directly connected to a wind park in the nearby community of Dummerstorf before the gates of Hansestadt. Thereby electric vehicles can always be charged with “green” electricity for the first time in the northeast. The approval procedures for the wind park planned by WIND-projekt GmbH and equipped with new pilot wind turbines from the firm Nordex are close to conclusion.

The construction of the hydrogen fueling station in Rostock was also supported by the Federal Government within the framework of the National Innovation Program (NIP), under which the federation has allocated funds amounting to 20-million Euros for the development of a hydrogen fueling station through the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW). TOTAL currently operates hydrogen fueling stations in Berlin (four stations), Hamburg, Munich, Ulm, Stuttgart-Fellbach and Geiselwind. Additional stations in Cologne and Karlsruhe are under construction and projects in Hamburg, Neuruppin, Leipzig and Ingoldstadt are in preparation.

ABOUT H2 MOBILITY

H2 MOBILITY Deutschland GmbH & Co.KG is responsible for the nationwide development of a hydrogen infrastructure for the provision of cars with fuel-cell propulsion systems in Germany. Their first goal is to operate up to 100 stations in seven German metropolitan areas by 2018/19 (Hamburg, Berlin, Rhine-Ruhr, Nurnberg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich) as well as along highways and the autobahn. By 2023, up to 400 hydrogen stations should ensure nationwide coverage, which would make up the largest network of hydrogen fueling stations worldwide. H2 MOBILITY takes on all operational tasks, among them being network planning, approval, procurement, construction and operation. The partners are Air Liquide, Daimler, Linde, OMV, Shell and TOTAL. BMW, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen advise H2 MOBILITY as associated partners. www.h2-mobility.de

ABOUT NOW

NOW GmbH, the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology, was founded in 2008 by the Federal Government, represented by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Information. It coordinates two of the federation’s funding programs — the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) as well as the funding guidelines for electromobility of the BMVI. Both programs assist with market preparation in order to design mobility and energy provision in the future efficiently and with low emissions. Also, NOW supports the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Information with regard to program implementation of infrastructure for electric mobility and the development of the strategies for both mobility and fuel. www.now-gmbh.de
