Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH and MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, a specialist for salt-bed reactors, have closed an agreement for joint development of industrial-scale LOHC hydrogenation reactors.

The Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) technology developed by Hydrogenious Technologies enables efficient transport and storage of large amounts of hydrogen at ambient conditions – a breakthrough for hydrogen distribution to industry and mobility customers. Following the commissioning of first container-based pilot systems by Hydrogenious Technologies, this joint development now aims at a stepwise scaling of hydrogenation systems to the multi-ton per day scale of today’s hydrogen sources. Combined with the smaller hydrogen release systems (ReleaseBOXes), the scale-up aims at significantly reducing the cost of hydrogen delivery and therewith especially at supporting the breakthrough of hydrogen mobility.

The agreement has been signed in August this year by Dr. Daniel Teichmann, CEO of Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH, and Prof. Rolf Bank, Plant Manager of the MAN plant in Deggendorf. MDT Diesel & Turbo is a leading manufacturer of reactor systems and components for the chemical and petrochemical industry and has, with its proprietary salt-bed reactor technology, a broad experience in development, engineering and manufacturing of large scale reactor systems. Hydrogenious Technologies, as a pioneer of the commercial LOHC technology, brings the necessary process know-how as well as a comprehensive understanding of the overall system requirements into the cooperation.

Hydrogenious Technologies‘ CEO Dr. Daniel Teichmann sees the cooperation as a milestone for the LOHC technology development: „This cooperation lays the basis for the build-up of industrial scale hydrogenation units, which will lower the costs for hydrogen delivery to industry and mobility applications significantly. We are very happy to have gained such a strong and reputable partner like MAN Diesel & Turbo for this cooperation. “

Prof. Rolf Bank, Plant Manager of the MDTplant in Deggendorf, adds: „We see the LOHC Technology developed by Hydrogenious Technologies to have the potential to revolutionize hydrogen logistics as we know it today. And we are happy to be able to contribute our part to this development. “

Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH

The Hydrogenious Technologies GmbH, headquartered in Erlangen, is a pioneer and technology leader for Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC). Based on the LOHC technology, Hydrogenious Technologies develops and builds container-based hydrogen storage and release systems. The patented technology enables safe and efficient hydrogen transport in an easy to handle liquid, making pressure tanks unnecessary. The LOHC material used by Hydrogenious Technologies is non-toxic, hardly flammable and non-explosive.

Hydrogenious Technologies was founded in January 2013 by Dr. Daniel Teichmann, Prof. Arlt, Prof. Schlücker and Prof. Wasserscheid as a spin-off of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität ErlangenNuremberg. Hydrogenious Technologies has been awarded several awards such as the Innovation Award of the Germany Industry, the Bavarian Founders Award and the Science4Life Venture Cup.
